Pallet Shipping Hidden Costs: What Carriers Don't Tell You
A quoted price is rarely the final price. This guide breaks down every surcharge that can add 30–80% to your invoice — and how to avoid them.
Updated April 2026 · Based on rate cards from 5+ UK-EU carriers
On a typical UK→EU pallet shipment, hidden fees can add £80–£200 to the base rate. The three biggest: fuel surcharge (+8–18%), customs clearance (£55–£130 combined), and tail lift (£15–£35). Always request a fully itemised quote.
1. Fuel Surcharge — Always Applied
This appears on every pallet invoice regardless of carrier or route. Updated monthly based on fuel price movements.
Fuel Surcharge
Applied by all carriers to offset fuel price volatility. Calculated as a percentage of base rate, updated monthly.
2. Equipment & Access Surcharges
Apply based on the physical characteristics of your collection or delivery address.
Tail Lift / Liftgate
Required when the delivery address has no loading dock. Covers the hydraulic lift on the truck.
Difficult Access / Remote Area
Applied to postcodes classified as remote or requiring special routing (Scottish Highlands, some rural zones).
Oversized / Overweight
Applied when pallet exceeds standard dimensions or weight limits for the booked service.
Saturday / Out-of-Hours Delivery
Premium for delivery outside standard Mon-Fri business hours.
3. Operational Fees
Arise from events during shipment. Most are avoidable with proper planning.
Re-delivery Fee
Charged when the driver arrives and cannot complete delivery (no one present, access issues).
Storage / Demurrage
Daily fee if pallet is held at depot beyond the free storage period (typically 24-48h).
4. Customs Clearance Costs (UK-EU)
Post-Brexit, every UK-EU shipment requires customs processing in both directions. Often not included in the headline quote.
EU Import Clearance
Fee charged by the EU destination country customs agent for processing the import declaration.
UK Customs Clearance
Fee for processing UK customs export or import declaration (post-Brexit cross-border shipments).
VAT & Import Duty
Import VAT and applicable duty on goods value. Varies by HS code and country.
5. Route-Specific Fees
Certain corridors have additional fees tied to geography or routing.
Transit Country Fee
Some UK-Spain routes transit through France; some UK-Italy routes transit via France and Switzerland. Additional handling charges may apply.
6. Optional But Recommended
Not mandatory but important for protecting your shipment.
Insurance / Goods in Transit
Standard carrier liability is limited (typically £1.30-£8/kg). Additional declared value cover available.
